DNA: FROM DOUBLE HELIX TO YOUR PERSONAL GENOME IN 60 YEARS: Using next generation DNA sequencing it is now possible to read the entire content of your own DNA in a few weeks for just $10,000. In a year or two the price is predicted to drop to $1000 or less and will be routinely done similar to the blood test, with the results constituting your genome sequence stored on the computer thumb drive. Since this information holds the keys to potential life-threatening medical conditions, as well as simply to your personal traits (psychological character, mental abilities, national origin(s), professional inclinations, etc.) the question is: do you want to gain this information about yourself, your spouse, your relatives? Do you think the insurance company, your in-laws, governmental agencies will want? And if they do get it, what will they do with it? |
